The Chamber of Commerce is encouraging the community to put your money where your HEART is on Saturday, November 26, 2016, for Shop Small Saturday. Shop Small Saturday was originated by American Express in 2010, as a retort to the overwhelming sales on Black Friday for big box stores. In short, Shop Small Saturday is the “Black Friday” for small businesses. The Saturday after Thanksgiving has since been known as “Shop Small Saturday”.
Since its inception, the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce has participated and encouraged merchants and residents to “shop small”.
The Chamber of Commerce is jumpstarting Shop Small Saturday with “12 Days of Shopping Small”. Beginning on November 15th and extended thru Saturday, November 26th, residents can bring in receipts, daily, from a Jasper County SMALL BUSINESS. A drawing will be held at 5 pm each day to reward their reinvestment into the community.
On Saturday, November 26th, local merchants and businesses throughout Jasper County are encouraged to offer deep discounts, free gifts and much more. The Visitors’ Center will be open from 9 am to 4 pm, featuring home businesses that do not have a storefront. These business-owners will have BIG deals on everything from Tupperware to hair bows! Jasper County High School Competition Cheerleaders will fund raise by having a hot beverage stand set up too! Hot chocolate and coffee will be offered in the morning, 9 am – 12 pm and in the evening, 4 pm – 5:30 pm. In addition, local students, earning community service hours, will offer complimentary gift wrapping for small town shoppers, as well. Local merchants will offer “Early Bird” specials, giveaways and much more! See the Monticello News’ Shop Small insert for specific sales at your favorite businesses.
At the conclusion of the day, Santa Claus will make an appearance on the Downtown Square. Children and the young at heart are encouraged to visit with Santa from 4 pm – 5:30 pm. The City of Monticello will officially ring in the holiday season by Lighting the Tree on the Downtown Square after a brief welcome and special music at 5 pm.
The entire community is invited to come early and shop with your Downtown merchants, stop by the Visitors’ Center to shop with local proprietors and have your new finds gift-wrapped!
